PCM1820: Running ADC's slightly over their spec'd max sample rate.

Part Number: PCM1820
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1865, PCM1864, PCM1821, ,

I am evaluating a number of TI ADC's. Specifically, PCM1820, PCM1821, PCM1864, PCM1865. I see that the spec has their maximum sampling frequency at 192 kHz. Would these chips be able to handle going up to a sampling frequency of 196 kHz?

I did manage to run the PCM1820EVM in slave mode at 196 kHz without any apparent issues, but maybe there was some negative effects I did not take notice of.

  • Hi Cameron,

The part likely "works" at a higher sample rate, but we can't guarantee that the performance will hold up once you go past the documented maximum. You might see dips in the THDN, dynamic range, lifespan, etc. These "outside the box" test cases are not typically documented, so it's hard to say how well it will do.

    Best regards,
