TAS58xx: Question on PWM Phase Selection / Synchronization in Multi-devices

Hi Expert,

I got 2 questions on multi-devices PWM phase selection.

Q1. If a customer uses 2 devices, is there any recommended combination for phase selection between phase0 to phase4?

Q2. If a customer uses multiple device and multiple phase, What are the expected trade offs in terms of audio quality?

Best regards,

Jay

  • Hi, Jay.

    About your two questions.

    1. In the case of two devices, you can choose any two combination.

The phase difference of the two channels of TAS58xx is 180 degrees, which has a certain suppression effect on EMC. Phase shifting is used between multiple devices to avoid the situation where the noise phase is superimposed in the same phase.

    2. This function will not affect the audio quality.

  • Hi Wei,

    Thanks for your explanation.

For about 180 degrees phase difference between channels, I thought it would make audio quality worse if PWM phase is reversed between channels . So it is recommended to match in-phase PWM between channels. What do you think? Isn't there any degradation in audio quality when using out of phase PWM between L and R?

    Thanks,

    Jay

  • Hi Jay.

Sound quality won't make any difference.

Only the PWM phases of the two channels differ by 180 degrees, which does not affect the phase of the output.

  • Hi Wei,

Thanks for letting me know. Great help.

    Thanks!
