TLV320AIC3254: preamplifier on the microphone

Part Number: TLV320AIC3254
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA2505

Hi Team,

Our customer is developing a video doorbell-type device that will need to have voice input into a microphone.

The TLV320AIC3254 application schematics don't necessarily show that a need for a preamplifier on the microphone. The codec also has a mic bias pin which supports this. Would you recommend using a preamp or not for this type of application? The customer I want to make sure that it can pick up voices well with good noise cancellation

Thanks for the help!

Regards,

Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

A pre-amp isn't necessarily a requirement. Like you said, the MICBIAS pin can power the microphone. The codec is capable of handling mic level inputs well and there are both analog and digital options for controlling the gain. Of course both of those raise the noise floor, so it really depends on what noise performance you want. I would say in general you don't need one but a pre-amp like the PGA2505 would make for a more robust design.

    Best regards,

    Jeff
