TLV320AIC3256: TLV320AIC3256: Mono config and Ext Audio amplifier interface

Part Number: TLV320AIC3256
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS2552

HI TI Team,

In one of our Consumer product we are planning to use Audio codec# TLV320AIC3256. Here we have the following queries to be resolved.

1) We require to drive a Mono Speaker with 3W, so it seems it will require an external 3W Audio amplifier. In order to interface an external audio amplifier can you confirm which output can be used?

We suspect using HPL and HPR, either in differential mode or single-ended mode. Is this correct understanding?

2) As per the datasheet it supports Digital PDM microphones, we are planning to use 2x PDM microphones. Please confirm that PDM 2x Mic is possible.

3) Can you please also suggest the best suitable audio amplifier considering an 8Ohm Mono speaker of 3W?

4) can you confirm the status is active and share if there is any near future EOL plan for this part.

Looking for your quick support on this.

  • Hi Bimalsinh,

    1) I'd recommend the Line Outs over the Headphone Drivers when interfacing with an external amplifier since the Line Outs can drive a wider range of impedances, but whichever you use depends on the input impedance of the amplifier chosen.

    2) Yes, MFP1 or MFP3 can accept a PDM input. For 2 microphones, only one input pin is needed.

    3) I'd recommend the TAS2552. This requires I2C to configure but since you're using this with the codec, it'll just be another device on the bus. If you want a hardware only solution you could use the TPA3111 but that requires a higher supply voltage than what you would be using already. If you need further support on those parts, please make a new ticket with respect to the part in question.

    4) This codec is active and will not approach EOL in the near future.

    Best regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your quick response, was very helpful. Still, i have more queries here as below:

    1) Is the Mono DAC out configuration possible in both Lineout and Headphone drivers? As we are using a single Speaker for our product.

    2) Is the DAC out configurable to provide single-ended and/or Differential Mono outputs?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bimalsinh,

Yes, you can use it mono and in single-ended or differential mode per the datashet. FYI, Jeff is out of office until Monday in case there are further questions.
