OPA1671: Does the OPA1671 have internal protection diodes?

Part Number: OPA1671

HI, I was wondering if OPA1671 has internal protection diodes. does anyone know?

I intend to use the opamp as a non inverting amplifier.

Do you suggest to use also discrete diodes to protect from overvoltage spikes?

would it be better to add also  TVS diodes at the power supply pins?

The input signal is generated by a piezo transducer, which may produce spikes of voltage .

  • Hi lum,

The OPA1671 has the normal, internal ESD protection diodes that are intended to protect the device from an out-of-circuit handling event. Those diodes are not intended to provide any other form of protection. They should not be used, or depended on, to protect the device from any in-circuit electrical overstress (EOS) event.

The recommended EOS protection needs to be external to the OPA1671 and applied to whatever pins could be subjected to EOS. If it is a supply pin, then a power supply type TVS should be used. If it's input pins are at risk, then low-leakage, low capacitance TVS diodes intended for that purpose should be used.

Another effective EOS protection is a series input resistor used to limit the input current. But do keep in mind its adds noise to the signal path.

  • OPA1671 is a low voltage CMOS op amp with only ESD protection diodes on I/O pins (no back-to-back diodes between the input terminals) - see below.

The maximum rated supply voltage of OPA1671 is 6V; thus, if supply can get higher, you must add TVS on supply pins.  Additionally, in case the input voltage would result in input current thru ESD protection diodes, you must add a series input resistor to limit the current to 10mA or less. Please review EOS protection section of attached presentation.
