TLV320AIC31: TLV320AIC3100 and TLV320AIC3120 Radio Line and additional applications

Part Number: TLV320AIC31

Greetings,

For the TLV320AIC3100 and TLV320AIC3120 Audio CODECs

1- Can I use differential Mic inputs as Line for the single ended stereo radio output? If I can use it in that way can I add an optional mic and which pins should I use for this additional mic?

2-Can I use headphone outputs with an amplifier to drive a high power speaker?

  • Hi,

    1. Can you share a schematic of your configuration/setup. Are you intending to use MIC1LP/M for differential input and MIC1RP for additional mic? Then is the application asking for a single ended output configuration instead of BTL?

    2. It is possible so if you're using a class-d amplifier on HPOUT, the signal from HPOUT is 2.7Vp-p, you can couple it into an audio amp by replacing 47mF cap with 10uF,  and using a LPF with 4kΩ and 1nF.

  • Are you looking to have a circuit similar to this?

  • Hello, I have similar question.

    • For our project, we'll have an enclosed surface and inside of it, we'll have a mini speaker up to 2.5W.
    • We are also thinking having an external high power class D amplifier from hprout-hplout as can be seen on the image (up to 2x100W). What do you think of the connection and any part number suggestion for the amplifier?
    • On the figure, I added a radio tuner, what do you think about the connection?
    • We also want to add a mic how can we connect it to the codec for our case?
    • Can this IC mix all these inputs?

Does TLV320AIC3100 has a linux driver?

Can I have your suggestions and ideas for the mentioned usage purposes of the codec?

Thank you in advance. Best Regards.

  • We are also thinking having an external high power class D amplifier from hprout-hplout as can be seen on the image (up to 2x100W). What do you think of the connection and any part number suggestion for the amplifier?

From HPOUT to some amplifier I suggest adding a coupling capacitor and LPF before input as mentioned above. Connect with Mid-power audio (MPA) marketing or applications team for a suggestion on an amplifier that can suffice, LPA portfolio of amplifiers only goes up to 20W

On the figure, I added a radio tuner, what do you think about the connection?

Radio tuner matches design recommendation in application circuit included above, it looks okay.

We also want to add a mic how can we connect it to the codec for our case?

From d/s of AIC3100 you have MIC1LP/M for a differential MIC input and MIC1RP that can be used for headset detection. If you're not using headset detection it can be a single-ended MIC to ground.

Possible Combinations: 1 Diff + 1 SE or 3 SE

Can this IC mix all these inputs?

There are input and output mixers in AIC3100, details for digital mixing are highlighted in 7.3.10 of d/s

  • Hello,

    Thanks for the reply,

1- Is this circuit okay for the desired application?

2- 1V8 and 3V3 supplies coming from PMIC at the same time but 5V comes early independent from PMIC. Is it suitable for power sequence?

3- Reset pin shall be connected with MPU and pulled down untill the power sequence finished. After the power sequence ended Reset pin pulled up, is it okay?

  • Hi,

    Schematic comments:

    • I suggest pulling down RESET to ensure a condition when no power is supplied or MPU is disconnected, it allows it to be initialized until power supplies are stable. (7.3.2 of d/s)
    • I suggest pull SCL/SDA up to IOVDD or 3.3V
    • If connecting speaker output to amplifier , i suggest adding a LPF
    • Capacitors for filtering at tuner should be okay, typical applications suggest 0.47uF
1V8 and 3V3 supplies coming from PMIC at the same time but 5V comes early independent from PMIC. Is it suitable for power sequence?

5V supplies SPKVDD which is first in power sequence, should be okay if the remaining sequences are satisfied. (7.3.1 of d/s)

    Hello,

For the LP filter, 1nF 50V cap will be used but should it be C0G cap or can X7R be used?

Instead of 4kΩ, is it okay to use 0402 4.7kΩ with %1 tolerance?

  • Also I wanted to know if there is a limitation with the codec when IOVDD used at 1.8V due to our application processor?

  • Hi Genkay,

Either or is okay but I use X7R in most cases, 4.7k resistor is fine.

The only specifications outlined in d/s is difference in timing specs for different I2S protocols (5.6-5.10)

  • Hello Daveon, thank you for your answer. I have a question about power sequence. In d/s it states that sequence should be

    1. Speaker supplies
    2. Digital supplies
    3. Analog supplies

but at section 7.3.1 it divides digital supplies into two and recommends first power-up IOVDD then shortly after power-up DVDD. We have single 1.8V source so IOVDD and DVDD will be powered up at the same time. Would that cause any problems?

    Thank you in advance!

    Best Regards.

  • Hi,

Our recommendation is to follow the power sequence in the datasheet, depending on the system violating the sequence could cause undesired behavior such as communication with other IC especially when power supplies are used in the I2C bus.

This is a legacy device and the datasheet is vague in the timing spec that DVDD should satisfy after IOVDD, I suggest trying to create some delay if possible between the rails.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

  • Hello,

Thank you for your answer. I've checked the evm board but I could not see a power sequence. I think IOVDD and DVDD are powered up at the same time. Can you also check? Thank you in advance!

    Best Regards.

  • Hi,

I am out of office today for US holiday so please be patient as responses may be delayed.

    Thank you for your patience.

  • Hi,

I recommend following the power supply sequencing in app note  http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/SLAA492 for TLV320AIC3xxx devices
