PCM4204EVM: Is there a driver for PCM4204 that works on Raspberry Pi?

Sorry for the rookie question,

I just bought a PCM4204EVM board, and I want to interface it with my Raspberry Pi 3B+.

But couldn't find its driver for any Linux system.

If no driver, is it a good choice to alternate my design by replacing the PCM4204 with PCM1864/1865?

Hi Shan,

The PCM4204 is a hardware controlled device, meaning a driver wouldn't do any good. If you need to interface with Linux, then yes I'd go with the PCM186x (software controlled) family instead.

Hi Jeff,

Does hardware controlled device mean that no matter how I set the switch on the evaluation board, there is no way to connect to the linux system?

Or is this process possible, but just a bit more cumbersome?

Also besides the AD186x, I'm considering the TLV320ADC6140, would this also be a possible option?

Hi Shan,

Hardware controlled means that all settings of the device are controlled with physical connections such as resistors to a pin. You could still use a Linux system to drive your audio bus (I2S) but you would otherwise have no control over the device.

The ADC6140 is a software controlled device and would be controllable with Linux. There are also Linux drivers available to use on the ADC6140 product page.

In order to drive this I2S device (PCM4204), what programs do I need?

I was expecting there to be some drivers like these:

These programs are not just controlling the device, but also managing ALSA devices in the Linux system.

Or probably for PCM4204, I can use some default Linux I2S driver?

Hi Shan,

All your linux system would need to do is interface I2S clocks and receive data. If the PCM4204 is in slave mode, then the linux system would need to provide the clocks. If the device is in master mode, then the device provides the I2S clocks and the linux system would need to be able to receive them. Since this isn't unique to the device, a generic driver should be fine.
