TAS2557: Questions about smartamp

Part Number: TAS2557

Hi team,

I have a customer design in TAS2557 and have some questions about smartamp.

VBAT 5V 1.2A
4ohm 6W loudspeaker

1. What's the range of smartamp and EQ latency?

2. Do we have reference or default for the EQ setting?

3. If they don't use smartamp, can they still have the EQ function?

4. Do EQ 1-6 , 7-10  function work? What;s the difference with the latency?

5. The setting of the smartamp only works at the first setting? If they set again, there will have error.

6.Do the I2C reg works after the  power state needs to be checked?

7.Do auto boost need higher current?

  • Hi Len,

I'm not fully clear on a few of these questions, but I'll comment on some of them and reply back by tomorrow morning.

  • Hi Len,

    Adding some comments below:

    1. Could you elaborate on what "range" means on this question? Is it the bandwidth? The group delay of the digital processing block is close to 128 samples, with some slight variations depending on the EQ and other processing features settings.
    2. By default, all the digital processing features (outside of speaker protection) are set for passthrough. The tuning of EQ and other features would be very closely related to the application requirements or personal preferences.
    3. TAS2557 (and pretty much any other integrated smartamp) has 2 main operating modes: ROM mode and SmartAmp mode. ROM mode works as a simple Class-D amplifier without any of the digital processing features. SmartAmp mode enables all the processing features. If customer don't really need the speaker protection, they can set the protection limit values to the maximum, like xmax=10mm and tmax=1000degC, this should prevent the protection from kicking in while still having the rest of the feature like EQ running.
    4. Could you please elaborate more on this question? The SmartEQ function uses 6 biquads from the total of 10, but this can be adjusted for more or less quantity or be completely disabled so that all the 10 biquads are available for manual configuration.
    5. Do you mean the device works correctly when initialized the first time, but if trying to re-initialize it doesn't work? Does that mean you have to toggle the reset pin and then initialize again?
    6. I'm not clear on this question either, could you please elaborate?
    7. I assume auto boost means the Class-H mode. The difference between the two modes is explained in data sheet section 9.3.11.1: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tas2557.pdf#page=24
