TLV320ADC6140: Configuration to operate at 192kHz+ sampling rates

Hi,

   I am attempting to use the TLV320ADC6140 to record high frequency signals in a physics experiment.

My target sampling rate is 384 kHz 32-bit recording on 2 channels, but the best I have been able to accomplish is 192 kHz on 2 channels.  I set this in the Line Properties settings in Windows 10.  The format options I have go no higher than 192 kHz.

I am using the TLV320ADC6140 with the AC-MB and I am using the USB interface for communication.  I have installed the PurePath Console and the TI UAC instrument drivers. 

Is it possible to configure the TLV320ADC6140-EVM for 384 kHz sampling rates with it operating in slave mode and operating over the USB interface?

    The device is certainly capable of running at 384kHz, but I'm checking with our software team to see if the USB driver has a sample rate limitation.

    I am also interested in sampling at 192 kHz on 4 channels but I am unable to adjust the BCLK to FCLK ratio to allow transmission of the data on the serial bus.  I know based on specifications that the eval board can handle this, but I don't know how to configure the GUI to make it possible.

  • Hi Brian,

    The only workaround I found for 4 channels is to open the TI USB Audio Driver and set the bit width to 16, along with setting the windows setting to 192kHz, 16bit. That will give you 4 channels with a BCLK/FSYNC Ratio of 64. That ratio is set by the XMOS firmware on the AC-MB board; it can't be changed through the GUI. The convenience of the USB comes with a few limitations like this one. You'll get the most flexibility by using an external interface. 

    I did some research of my own, I think the 192kHz limitation comes down to Windows itself. There may be ways with third party software to get around it but I'm not an expert in that.

    Also, does TI have a white paper that discussing setting up the eval board in master rather than slave mode?

  • Hi Brian,

    There's no white paper since it's a pretty short process, but it is missing from the user guide so apologies for that. In the "Audio Serial Bus" tab on PPC3, there's a Master/Slave drop down box. Once that is set to Master, you need to set GPIO1 to receive the MCLK in the "GPIO" tab on PPC3 and supply an MCLK to the GPIO1 pin. Assuming the PLL is in auto mode and there's no clocking errors, that's all you need to do to run the EVM in master mode.

  • I just discovered that the maximum input bandwidth for this product is 80 kHz.  Does Texas Instruments make an eval board using the Burr-Brown ADC that has an input bandwidth > 100 kHz?

    Unfortunately we don't support a bandwidth that high in the audio group. The precision ADC products might have something more suitable for you.
