PCM5101A: For irregular usage

Part Number: PCM5101A

Hi All,

I have a question regarding the operation of PCM5101A.
Please answer the questions below.

1) Does the IC have any built-in countermeasures to avoid pop noise when turning on the power?
     What will happen if the power is turned on with BCLK/LRCLK/DATA being input before the power is turned on?"

2) Does the IC have any built-in countermeasures to avoid pop noise when turning off the power?
    What will happen if the power is turned on with BCLK/LRCLK/DATA being input before the power is turned off?"

3) If BCLK is stopped during operation, how will the AMP output?

  • Hello Ishiwata;

    As you know  pop noise is  caused by a device not having enough time to detect power loss and start the muting process. PCM5101A uses 2 methods to mitigate this by having clock Clock Error Detect in PCM5101A as well as internal reset and external soft mute capability. So the following sections suggest the method to avoid and prevent pop noise

    Please refer to sections  11.2 Recommended Powerdown Sequence  and  11.4 Power-On Reset Function for more detailed discussion on how the I2S signals (BCLK/LRCLK/DATA) and powerdown/up should be related to avoid pop noise. No other mechanism is imbedded in the device.

    Kind regards,

    Arash

  • Hi Arash,

    Thank you for your answer. I understand.

    I have an additional question.
    How will the device behave if OUTR and OUTL are shorted?

    Will the protection function work and cause the device to stop working?
    Please tell me the expected behavior.

    Best Regards,
    Ishiwata

  • The protection is for supply under voltage or failure of the clks<  shorting the 2 outputs will not make the device  to stop working.

  • Hi Arash,

    Thank you for your answer.

    Sorry for the late reply.
    Am I correct in my understanding that the protection function works?
    If so, what protection will work?

    Ishiwata

  • Hello Ishiwata;

     I was refering to Intelligent clock error and Power Sense under voltage protection that utilizes  two-level mute system for pop-free performance.

    I am not aware of any other protection in this device

    Arash
