Hi,

I have a customer using the following device, and they had a question about the types of capacitors spec'd in the datasheet. The data sheet calls for two 10uF capacitor caps which should be tantalum or aluminum electrolytic, would you be able to provide clarification as to why they can’t use large value ceramics (X7R or X5R)? Thanks!

Hi Abigail, I can think of few possible reasons why the datasheet is suggesting tandeum or aluminum.

Usually tantalum capacitors exhibit linear capacitance change with respect to temperature whereas cermaic caps have a nonlineat behaviour over temperature range. Also unlike Titanium capaciter, ceramic capacitores have degradation in capacitance as it ages. Also for smaller caps we use ceramic ones.

Having said that, datasheet is just recommending it and probably it will be okay to use ceramic caps - if this is called for.
