TLV320DAC3203: TLV320DAC3203 direct interfacing with Headphone

Part Number: TLV320DAC3203
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAD5212

Tool/software:

Hi Ti Support,

We are going to integrate TLV320DAC3203IRGER with ESP32-S3 via I2S as a single chip without its output connected directly to the ear/headphone via Audio Jack. The whole system is running at 3.1V.

Please note that ESP-32 I2S supports 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit resolution with BCLK clock frequency, from 10 kHz up to 40 MHz and the headphone impedance will be 16 to 32 Ohms. Please clarify the following;

1. As per TLV320DAC3203 the supports 16-bit till 32 bits resolution so this is fine. Please let me know if TLV320DAC3203 is good to use or you would like to recommend any other low cost single chip solution?

2. As per the datasheet in single-ended drive configuration these drivers can drive up to 15mW power into each headphone with Avdd is at 1.8V but it is also mentioned that the headphone amplifier can run directly from the higher voltage supply on LDOIN (upto 3.6V). As per the Avdd pin description it is both input and output power depending upon the A-LDO. So is it possible if we supply LDOIN by 3.1V that will enable the A-LDO and it will generate internally the 1.8V?

3. We will be only using I2S for audio and we will not be using either Analog (AIN pins) or MIC inputs so please confirm it is OK to leave them floating?

Thanks and regards,

Mat

  • Hi Mat,

    1) TLV320DAC3203 is a good option. If you're not too locked into the device however I encourage you to look at the TAD5212. It is a part that will be releasing in full soon. It will have some higher performance and more robust feature set that might be appealing to you.

    2) You have to enable the LDO via software, it will not automatically respond to a voltage on LDOIN, but the idea is correct. You can use the internal LDO to generate the 1.8V needed for the analog circuitry and then take advantage of the LDOIN voltage to drive the headphone driver.

    3) It's recommended to AC couple unused analog inputs to GND for noise performance reasons. We typically recommend a 0.47uF cap.

  • Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for the quick response.

    1) Thanks for the suggestion. I have quickly reviewed the TAD5212 and it looks nice except that we have to add external amp before the out to the Headphone that we don't need in case of TLV320DAC3203IRGER as TLV320DAC has internal headphone driver. We would like to connect directly the output from TAD5212 to the headphone.

    2) Fine, we will skip adding an external regulator and will use the internal 1.8V by enabling the LDO to use LDOIN to generate the 1.8V. Can you please confirm if this is correct? if yes then I am assuming we have to set this via I2C to configure it on power up so that it will generate the 1.8V internally from LDOIN input of 3.1V in our case.

What if we don't turn ON  the LDO? So in this case there will be no voltage going to power the headphone driver and there will be no output?

    Thanks and regards,

    Mat

  • Hi Mat,

    1) Sorry, the preview data sheet may not make it obvious, but the TAD5212 can drive a headphone load without needing an external amp. It'll drive up to 62.5mW on a 4ohm load.

    2) Yes that's correct.

If you don't turn on the LDO then the analog portion of the device will not get powered on so you will get no output.

    Best regards,
    Jeff McPherson

  • Thanks Jeff for the clarification on each point. May I know the availability time for TAD5212 and also can the internal headphone amp drive the 16 to 32Ohm headphone?

    Kind regards,

    Mat

  • Hi Mat,

TAD5212 will be fully released early October.

The headphone driver can drive both 16 and 32ohm loads.

    Best regards,
