PCM1822: TDM mode / function of the FMT0 pin

Part Number: PCM1822
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1681

Tool/software:

I am confused by the datasheet about the function of the FMT0 pin.

According to section 8.3.2 / table 8-2 FMT0 selects whether to use I2S or TDM mode. There's nothing said about master or slave mode there, so I'd guess it applies to both. So far so good.

But then in section 8.3.2.1 the figures (fig. 8-1 to 8-4) suggest that FMT0 has something to do with timing / channel count, which doesn't make sense to me (especially since this is a two-channel-device). So I guess there might be something wrong with the pictures in 8.3.2.1.

Could someone of TI staff please elaborate on this one?

I'd like to use the device in TDM mode (slave mode) with 256 BCLK cycles (8 channels with 32 bits each) per frame (at 48 kHz), so I could connect it to the same audio interface together with a PCM1681 (8 channel DAC) to have 2 channel input and 8 channel output. I'd like to know if that is possible.

Thanks you.

Best regards,
Markus
