Hi,

I’m using the TPA2026D2 audio amplifier in the output section along with the WM8904CGEFL/V codec, and planning to drive two 3W, 4Ω speakers. Could you please confirm if this amplifier is suitable for such an application?

In the EVM schematics, I noticed that it mentions support for 8Ω to 32Ω speakers. Could you clarify whether 4Ω speakers can be supported in this setup? If not, please suggest an alternative amplifier suitable for driving 3W, 4Ω speakers.

Additionally, it would be helpful if you could share any available reference design files for our application.

Hey Akin,

This device can't push more than 1.72W per speaker. I suspect the 32Ohm is a typo and the UG actually means 8Ohm + 33uH load. If you look at the DS, most of the specs are with 4Ohm or 8Ohm plus 33uH inductors. 4Ohm is supported.

I think TPA2017D2 might be a better higher power choice.

But in the TPA2026D2 datasheet it is mentioned that it can support 3.2W per channel @ 4ohm 5V , and the one which you had shared can support 2.8W per channel right ? So the TPA2026D2 will be the better ? Can you please confirm this and kindly share any reference schematics of TPA2026D2 with 3W speakers or any others.

Hey Akin,

My initial observation didn't regard for the different load impedances. The 1.72W spec is strictly for the 8Ohm output power vs supply voltage performance. This is across one channel connected to an 8Ohm load. You can see proof of the plot in figure 26 for 8Ohm load.

The 3.2W/CH reported by the DS is for the device performance on 4Ohm. Look at this output power vs supply voltage plot in figure 25. This measurement is taken across one channel on a 4Ohm load.

To answer your first question, I think the TPA2026D2 would be suitable for you application.

I still suspect the 32Ohm mentioned in the UG is a typo.

Hey Akin,

Consider the 8Ohm to 32Ohm as the correct range of load for this device. Although there might not be a lot of specs of TPA2026 on 32Ohm load, the device is able to support load up to 32Ohm.

Hi Ore,

Thankyou for your update, please find the attached schematic and kindly help us to review it.

B2,B3 pins will be connected to SoC I2C,
A2,A3 pin will be connected to codec LINEOUTR,LINEOUTL and the Amp ground will be connected to codec LINEOUTFB
Codec Pin outs also attached for reference.

Hey Akin,

Make sure B2 and B3 are connected to the IOVDD of the system. This could be 1.8V or 3.3V.

Separate PVDDR and PVDDL decoupling circuits. These PVDD lines shouldn't be shorted together.

Use the cross reference tool on ti.com to find pin to pin compatible parts, or

Use the package type filter and pin count during an audio product search to find devices compatible with any device you are interested in.

I have a query regarding the INL- & INR- , we are connecting to AMP GND , so this AMP GND must be connected to WM8904CGEFL/RV codec - LINEOUTFB pin right ?

I recommend pulling SDA and SCL to a max of 3.3V and not PVDD voltage on your system.
