PCM5142: Play back Left +/- or Right +/- - replace by PCM5122

Part Number: PCM5142
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5122

Tool/software:

I have two questions about the PCM5142:

1) Seeing that it is possible to remap between incoming left and right audio to the outgoing DAC modules, is it possible to have one PCM5142 render only Left +/- and another do Right +/-? Are there volume settings that will invert one of the DACs and not the other, or is the IC limited to the settings in AUPL[1:0]  and AUPR[1:0] only permitting Left/Right +/+ combinations?

2) I currently use the PCM5142 and the built-in FIR filters. I don't use any MiniDSP functionality. Can I swap in the PCM5122 then?

Thanks,

Børge

  • Hello Borge,

PCM5142 is capable of handling TDM data  ( can shift cI2S data  using Register 41 on Page 0  ). However this register shifts the incoming data for both R and L by the amount that is  specified in this register  . From your post you need to shift the data of R and L channel of each DAC by different amount such that one DAC process the 2  Rights and another DAC process the 2 Lefts,  which the above mentioned DACs do not have this capability.

A work around is  to  arrange the data on the incoming TDM line such that ( for example) slot 0 and slot 1 are  the data from DAC1R and DAC2R and Slot 2 and Slot 3 are data from DAC1L and DAC2L   and then send them to the 2 DACs . In another word,  shift or manipulate the order of  the data outside the DAC and send both the R channels to one DAC and both L channels to the other DAC. ( R1, R2  and L1,L2)

You can swap PCM5142 with PCM5122.
