TAA3020: Analog Ground pin connection

Throughout the datasheet, there are several references to analog ground (AVSS) and how to layout power supplies, capacitors, voltage ratings etc. with reference to the AVSS pin.

The TAA3020 does not have a AVSS pin, only 4 x VSS corner pins and a thermal pad (VSS).

The device layout guidelines and reference in section 8 of the datasheet do not make it clear as to which pin would be AVSS.

On the 4 channel version, TAA3040, AVSS is located on pin 4.

Hi,

This is a typo in the datasheet, when AVSS is referenced in the datasheet they are actually referring to VSS. Additionally, both the thermal pad and corner pins share a ground internally.

Does this imply digital ground and analog ground are shared within the IC? I would be curious as to how this affects the quality of the incoming analog signal when compared with the TAA3040, which has a dedicated analog ground pin.

Hi Jacob,

While TAA3020 and TAA3040 do not share the same silicon die, meaning they are trimmed differently in production, they both share a common ground internally.

Theoretically, the designer of the pcb could connect circuits to the same ground. However, it is best practice and we do this on the EVM design, to separate analog and digital ground locally despite them being connected within the IC.
