Audio Amplifier

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM386, LM2876, LM4950

Hi,

Currently working on a school project that involves making an audio amplifier capable of driving an 8ohm speaker.  I was given an LM386 amplifier by a friend and was planning on using a push pull set up to drive up the power.  However, since the amp is going to be used on a go kart I am concerned that I will not be able to provide enough power for the speaker.  Any recommendations of using a mid/high power op amp such as the LM2876 instead for greater sound and quality?

  • Brett,

The amplifier you choose is based on your target output power, and by the constraints of your system.  If you need 10-40W output power, then yes, the LM2876 is a good fit.  Its simple to design with, and features our SPiKE protection that protects the device from damage due to over stress conditions.  With this amp, make sure you follow the heast sinking recommendations in the datasheet.  If you're looking for something in the 3-8W range, the LM4950 would be a better fit.

In both cases, make sure your power source can supply enough voltage and current to meet your output requirements.  You also need to make sure you choose a speaker that can handle the power level.
