PCM5100 -> DC output possible?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5100

can the PCM51xx Audio DACs output DC values? I could not read anything about a high pass filter inside the chip. Normally, audio DACs have ether an digital or analog HPF, what is sometimes also switchable.

We would need a 16 Bit DAC to set a DC offset voltage. Can that we done with the PCM51xx?

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi, Michael,

    I am checking into this for you.

  • Michael,

    There is no HPF in the PCM5100.  So DC Bias can be added.  Watch for pop-noise however, as if a clock error occurs, the digital volume is muted and then the analog mute is asserted, so pop noise could be heard when the analog mute is asserted if there is DC bias.  For this reason you may want to look at the PCM512x so you can disable the analog mute writing 0x01 to adress 0x06 (Page 1).  Also, note that the zero - data mute will not work because if there is DC bias, the input data will never be zero.
