TLV320AIC3256EVM-U Evaluation Module, PurePath Studio

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3256EVM-U, TAS3208, TLV320AIC3256

Hey!

I'm studying electronic and communication systems and i'm getting prepared
for my bachelor thesis this days witch will start in about two months.

I want to build a two channel audio-dj-mixer with dsp. Maybe i will use your
TLV320AIC3256EVM-U Evaluation Module for this, because there are not many
affordable boards with this amount of audio inputs and outputs.

Link to Board: http://www.ti.com/tool/tlv320aic3256evm-u

At the moment the board seems to be a good affordable solution, but i do have a few questions left.

I want to connect the user interface to the DSP by I²C or SPI. On the DSP i need some volume controls and a parametric 3-band equalizer for each channel witch also get's triggered from I²C (or SPI).  At the moment i'm missing an overview what's possible with PurePath Studio.

So, is there such an equalizer available in PurePath Studio? Are the controls of the GDE Blocks accessible from I²C or SPI?

How are the inputs of ADC-channel 2 (IN2_L IN2_R) realized on the Board? I see that there's no connector like channel 1, are there some kind of soldering-pads or any other kind of connectors?

Thanks and regards!

  • Hi, Christian,

I apologize, but we have a policy that we don't release PurePath Studio to students.

And, without PurePath Studio you can't program the miniDSP on the AIC3256.

I'm not very familiar with them, but maybe you could use on of our general purpose DSPs like TMS320C5x? I think their development tools are open to all.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

  •  okay, that's bad news... Your support team doesn't answer questions to students as well. Not even that you don't release PurePath Studio to them...

Do you release PurePath Studio to Universities?

  • Hi, Christian,

I'm sorry we kind of gave you the run-around...

IN2_L and IN2_R go to pads or some sort of test point on the EVM.

We only release PurePath Studio to corporate customers. Is your thesis being done in conjunction with a corporation?

  • Hi Don Dapkus,

I really would like to answer the question with yes but my bachelor thesis is not being done in conjunction with a corporation. I've already heard from my lecturer that you don't give PurePath studio to universities.

I'm writing this to describe my situation, because i don't think that it is part of Texas Instruments philosophy to refuse the software to me.

Before i became a student i made an apprenticeship at the EADS and became an "electrician for systems and devices". In this time i collected some experience in designing hardware. Meanwhile i collected some programming experience.

For my bachelor thesis i decided to built a two channel dj mixer with dsp, because this would be a great mixture of hardware and dsp-programming and i'm djing since a few years.

I already have your DSP Starter Kit TMS320C6713 from spectrum digital, which i originally wanted to use. When i received the board form my lecturer i  realized that the boards audio-codec doesn't have the analog inputs i need. To build a mixer like this i need two stereo line ins, two stereo line outs (one for headphone) and an additional mono input for microphone.

I know that i could help myself and build up an own dsp-board or some daughtercard. Because of the bordered bachelor-thesis-time this would mean not to build a whole device but only a part of it.

So i started to search for affordable dsp-boards a few weeks ago and realized that the selection is hardly limited. There are some opportunities from Analog Devices but they are much to expensive to get them from my student income.

After some fraught days of searching i came to your TAS3208 Low Cost Evaluation Module witch is one good solution for my project. The disadvantage is that you guys don't recommend this dsp for new designs because it's replaced by the TLV320AIC3256. After studying the documents from the TLV320AIC3256EVM-U Evaluation Module i realized that this is exactly what i need! It has the two stereo line ins, even a third one for microphone! It has two stereo line outs, one of them for headphone, and i can use it as a usb-sound device for a computer (witch would be the projects next step)!

As i tried to explain, it took me some days to find the board and now it really seems to be the best platform for my project available. At university i have a TI 6713 DSP Board but without an audio-codec i need. There are also boards from Analog Devices at university i could use, but getting an own one afterwards i can't afford.

Until today i only made good experience with Texas Instruments and i don't want to keep you guys in bad mind for the rest of my career. I'm sure that there is a way to use your  TLV320AIC3256EVM-U evaluation module for my thesis and i would really be thankful if you could help me in this.

If you can't help me maybe you know someone in the company who can. At the moment i don't want to give up that board and i really don't want to give up the project.

    Thanks and regards!
