PCM/DSD179x differences

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DSD1794A, DSD1792A, PCM1794A, PCM1792A

I'm looking at DACs for a new product - specifically the 1792A/1794A series. I'm not really sure what differentiates them.

The PCM1794A is PCM only, but the other three (PCM1792A, DSD1792A and DSD1794A) all handle PCM and DSD data. The only differences I can find, is that the PCM1792A uses the same pins for DSD and PCM, where the DSD parts have separate pins. But the DSD parts are almost twice the cost. Why is there a big difference in cost, for almost the same part?

  • Hi Mikkel,

The main difference between the 1792A and the 1794A is that the 1792A is software controlled (I2C or SPI) and the 1794A is hardware controlled. The performance between the parts is the same. The DSD parts are parts that have separate pins for DSD input as when these parts were designed, DSD data usually came from a different source than the PCM data. This allows the DSD1794A to use DSD as it would take software control to switch the pin functionality when they use the same pins. Please contact your local TI sales office for pricing discussions.
