TAS5706B, TAS5716 vs. Newer Models

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5706B, TAS5716, TAS5756M, TAS5754M

I've used both the TAS5706B and TAS5716 in the past with excellent results. Is one of them still the best choice today? I want audio fidelity specs equal to or better than the TAS5706B/TAS5716. Here are my other requirements:

*  Minimum of 2 channels x 20 Watts (<1%THD) into 8 Ohms or 4 Ohms (I can get the speakers in either impedance)

*  I2S input @ 48kHz sampling rate

*  DRC

I won't be using headphone or subwoofer outputs, volume control, EQ, Pseudo-Bass.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Marty,

    Thanks for sharing your great experience with these devices. I would recommend you to take a look to our newer closed loop digital amplifiers, the TAS5754M and TAS5756M. These devices meet the requirements you are asking for and also contributes with a reduced BOM, more powerful processing and better support.

    Diego, thank you for your quick response to my question. I am very familiar with the TAS5760. It has excellent fidelity performance. However, it does not have DRC. It's power limiter circuit is really just a way to set the clipping level below the power supply voltage.  There's nothing dynamic about it. This seems to be the same for the rest of the TAS576X family. Am I correct?

    Marty,

    You are right, TAS5760 does not have digital audio processing features, this is the same for all the TAS5760XX family.TAS5766 and TAS5768 belongs to a different family.

    I think the best choice for your application could be the TAS5754M or TAS5756M,

    Diego, thanks again for your quick reply. I carefully read the data sheets for both the TAS5754M and TAS5756M (and used the PDF "find" function as well) and could not find any reference to DRC or dynamic range control. Is DRC among the "several configurable DSP programs" in HybridFlow? If so, where can I get info on these DSP programs? They are not described in these data sheets, except for volume control, muting and other less complex functions.

    Marty,

    Effectively DRC is integrated in different HibridFlow processing. You can take a look to TAS5754/6M and PCM5242 HybridFlow Processor User's Guide to find more information about this.

    Diego, I have a PurePath console from last year when I evaluated the TAS5760EVM. The console board has a label with this info: PurePath-CMBEVM-CB Rev D. Is this the console I need to evaluate the TAS5754/6M?

    Yes, you can use the PurePath-CMBEVM-CB Rev D board to evaluate the TAS5754M/56M EVM.
