TPA3116 current trip

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3116D2

I am using TPA3116 on +24V with a "real world" 4 ohm speaker which drops to around 3.2 ohm over a range of frequencies. On music I find that the current trip protection cuts in regularly when music is played loud - up towards clipping. Is there any way of inhibiting the current trip to allow brief transients to exceed the limit?

  • Hello,

Unfortunately there is no way to disable the current limit on the amplifier. The TPA3116D2 current limit is 7.5A peak or 5.3A RMS. This would yield 112.5W into 4 ohms and 90W into 3.2ohms which is significantly more the 50W specification of the amplifier. The current limits are setup this way so that they don’t inhibit audio playing at maximum rated output power and minimum load impedance.

Have you verified that the current limit is shutting down the amplifier rather than over temperature?

The other solution is to use this in PBTL mode where the current limit is doubled to 15A peak since the outputs are paralleled.

    Best Regards,
    Matt
