Higher power CODEC to replace TLV320AIC32

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC32, TLV320DAC3100, TLV320AIC3100

I am looking for an alternative replacement for the TLV320AIC32 that has a more powerful headphone amplifier (~2W).

The replacement needs to have an I2S audio input digital interface and also be able to generate the master clock from the bit clock input using an internal PLL, just like the TLV320AIC32 does.

I am using a microprocessor (dsPIC33EP256MU810) to generate the word clock (44.1kHz) and the bit clock (2.822400MHz).  The TLV320AIC32 is configured for an audio data word length of 32-bits and receives bluetooth audio (I2S) from a Bluegiga WT32i bluetooth module.  The microprocessor configures the TLV320AIC32 via the I2C interface.

I don't actually need all the other features that the TLV320AIC32, such as ADC (microphone) inputs and 3D DSP etc.  But I would like to use the software drivers I have written for the microprocessor.  These drivers configure the CODEC (currently via I2C, but SPI is an option) and use the I2S interface for the audio input.

The TLV320AIC32 works well in my application, I just need a higher power amplifier.  I dont use most the features that the TLV320AIC32 has, so if anything its over the top.

Can anyone recommend a suitable alternative please ?

  • Hi, John,

We have codecs and DACs with speaker output that can reach the 2.5W. Please take a look at the TLV320AIC3100 or the TLV320DAC3100.

Just as additional comment, these devices (included the TLV320AIC32) can't generate a MCLK from the BCLK. MCLK is marked as only input in the datasheet. However, you may generate both BCLK and WCLK from the MCLK.

For more information about our devices, I suggest to take a look at our Audio Portal Tool: www.ti.com/.../tools-software.page

  • Hi Luis, thanks for your reply.  I am confused when you say " these devices (includding the TLV320AIC32) can't generate a MCLK from the BCLK".

The TLV320AIC32 datasheet states "The BCLK input can also be used to generate the internal audio master clock." on the bottom of page 24.

I even have it working, using a dsPIC33E to generate the WCLK (44.1kHz) and BCLK (2.8224MHz).  From these two inputs, the TLV320AIC32 generates its own internal audio master clock using the PLL.

This is one of my requirements, that the CODEC can generate  the internal audio master clock from the BLCK, because I am unable to provide the MCLK.

All I need is a TLV320AIC32 but with a more powerful headphone amplifier.

Could you please double check whether the TLV320AIC3100 or the TLV320DAC3100 can generate  the internal audio master clock from the BLCK ?

    Thanks

  • Hi, John,

My mistake. It was a confusion. BCLK can be used to generate the internal sampling rate. TLV320AIC32, TLV320AIC3100 and TLV320DAC3100 support this function. So, the values that you mentioned for WCLK and BCLK are acceptable.
