TAS5614a output capacitors issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5614A, TAS5342A

Dear All,

I have an audio project which leveraged TAS5614a to build a bluetooth speaker. During the course of development and testing, we noticed that the output capacitors  C91,C92,C88,C42,C39,C40,V41 (see below schematic) are extremely hot. Is there any suggestion to remedy this overheat problem? Peter

  • Hello Peter,

That does sound unusual. I just want to ask a few questions before I make any suggestions.

What kind of capacitors are you using there?  Typically we use smd ceramics on our EVMS and they tend to stay pretty cool.  for C88 and C87 we use 250V metalized Film capacitors.  if you are using metalized film caps,  the ESR tends to be higher on the lower voltage versions and thus,  they will get hot and potentially fail.

you mentioned that C88, C91 &C92 get hot,  but you didnt list C87, C89 & C93?   do only the listed capacitors get hot?

In general I recommend reading our Application note entitled "LC filter design" if you haven't already.  just search the TI site for the document number - slaa701a.   This document is an excellent resource when designing the LC filter.

    Best regards,

    -Steve Wilson

  • Hi Steve,
I posted a new question titled as "TAS5342A driving 2.1 speaker". So far I got no response on it. I wonder if you are able to help. TAS5342A is used in another BT speaker project, to drive a 2.1 speaker. I would like to get some hints on how I should configure TAS5342A in order to drive 2.1 speakers. Peter
