PCM1774: 32-Bit or 24-Bit I2S Data Format input

Part Number: PCM1774

Dear Team,

PCM1774 is the 16-Bit Audio DAC, when 32-Bit or 24-Bit I2S Data Format is inputted into the PCM1774, the PCM1774 can receive the audio data normally, without any error, right?

When the audio source data is 24-bit, if Audio DAC was 16-bit DAC, how would audio quality of the sound change compared with case of 24-bit Audio DAC?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Koshi Ninomiya

  • Hi, Ninomiya-san,

If 32-bit or 24-bit data is sent to the PCM1774, the device will ignore the LSB of the data stream and will use only the 16 most significant bits. The difference in the audio quality between 24-bit and 16-bit data is not easily identified in general hearing testing, but as 8-bits will be ignored, the resulting audio output will not have the same performance at higher frequencies.
