TL084 replace

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA4134, OPA1644, OPA4131, TL084

Hello! It is necessary to replace the operational amplifiers TL084 in the active crossover of the Dynaudio BM6 Mk3 studio monitor amplifier by higher quality ones. Can you please tell us which analogue can be selected without changing the crossover scheme (for example OPA1644 OPA4131 OPA4134 and others)? Thank you!

  • Morozov,

Does higher quality mean improved parameters or lower failure rates? Which parameters?
Most importantly, What is the supply voltage used for the application?
  • Hello! The supply voltage in the active crossover is approximately 25 volts. It uses 5 pieces of TL084C to split the frequency of sound into 2 bands - for woofers and tweeters. These operational amplifiers create a fairly audible noise in idle time. Apparently the manufacturer just saved by installing TL084C. I would like to change them to other, better-quality op-amps designed for audio. I see a good solution instead of TL084C is to apply OPA1644. I would like to know if such a replacement is possible without changing the device layout? Thank you!
  • Morozov,

OPA1644 is a superior device. Almost all quad op amp have the same pinout so many op amps including OPA1644 will drop in with no other changes.

The only noticeable difference between TL084C and OPA1644 usage is input common mode range.

     TL084C is [VCC-] + 4V to [VCC+]

    OPA1644 is [VCC-] to [VCC+] - 3.5V

There is a good chance that this difference will not matter.

  • Thank you very much for your response! Regards, Mikhail
