TPA3106D1: Failing this chip at the stress condition

Part Number: TPA3106D1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3130D2, TPA3118D2

This audio amplifier is failing when we amplify power ? What is the ,maximum stress it can stand? Need to know the input and output signal conditions to simulate and monitor its performance at the stress condition.

  • Hi Iqbal,
Could you please help to clarify the meaning of 'falling'? If you are talking abou the THD performance vs. Output power, please refer to the Figure 7~12 in the datasheet. About class-d device performance measurement, we have very detailed documents www.ti.com/.../slaa114.pdf www.ti.com/.../sloa068.pdf Please don't use the device in the stress/extreme condition without any margin, this could impact the device stability/reliability.
Please be noted that TPA3106D1 is a very old device, you could check TPA3118D2/TPA3130D2(use it in PBTL mode if there is only one output channel).

  • This amplifier is driving a horn at the output. We observed during sonication of that horn , the chip is not working with a 2% - 3% failure rate at the system level. We like to implement a test at the ICT test level to detect this failure. What is the input signals of this chip that can simulate this stress conditions so that we can test the chip at the PCBA level?
  • Hi Iqbal,
Thanks for your explanation. In your description, 'The chip is not working' means the device is damaged or just gets into shutdown mode? And what is the conditon that makes it stop working? Environment temperature? High output power? We need to know more detailed info for this failure.
    Best regards,

  • Hi Shawn,

There are several instances of failures.
    1. The output is not stable, it is fluctuating that resulted a variable power output .
    2. There is no output at all
    3. The output frequency is out of band

The output power is maximum 20 watt , it is driving the horn through a matching transformer.
I have few failed chips, can you please let me know your address, I can send them to you for analysis. I can also send the schematic if I have your e-mail.

    Regards,
    Iqbal
  • Hi Iqbal,
Thanks for your explanation. My email is shawn-zheng@ti.com. Could you please close this question and let's communicate off-line.
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Will communicate off line for resolution

    Thanks,
