TPA3001D1: SGTL5000 codec to class D and loudspeaker

Part Number: TPA3001D1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3112D1, TPA3136D2

Hi,

Existing boards in production use an obsolete audio codec with the TPA3001D1 class D amplifier

and a 4 Ohm 3W loudspeaker.

I have soldered the analog headphone output from the headphone jack of the Toradex colibri 3.2 eval

board to this TAP3001D1 part. The eval board has a built in speaker test file. I can hear this output

on a ear buds headphone, it outputs sound left or right, one at a time. I don't yet know how to

configure the SGTL5000 in mono mode.

The connectivity from the headphone jack to the class D is fine, left, right and ground. The class D amp

gets 12 V. I hear nothing out of the loudspeaker. What can I do to troubleshoot?

Thanks,

Priya

  • Hi Priya,

The first, TPA3001D1 is a very old device and it's not recommended in the new design, so the support could be very limited. For this application, you could check TPA3112D1.

TPA3001D1 can only be used in mono mode, the figure 30 in the datasheet shows the typical application circuit. So only left or right channel signal can be applied on the input of the device. If you want to enlarge both channels signal, you have to use two devices. The headphone output is usually in single-ended mode, so please connect the INN to GND through 0.47uF capacitor, and connect the headphone R/L channel output to INP through 0.47uF capacitor.

To make sure the device is working, please probe the output signal on the output pins to see whether the PWM waveform is switching.

    Best regards,

    Shawn Zheng.

  • Thank you for the suggestions. I will try them shortly. For the new design, the TPA3136D2 is being considered. Let me know if you have any feedback on that.
    Thanks,
    Priya
  • Hi Priya,

TPA3136D2 is a good choice for this application. Could you please help to close this question if it's answered? Thank you!
