TPA3116D2EVM: Board won't operate in BD modulation Mode

Part Number: TPA3116D2EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3116D2

Hello TI,

I'm using the TPA3116D2EVM with 12-18V PVCC and an 4-8ohm dummy load.

I've tried to replicate the measurements from the DS which are mostly with the BD Modulation (JP7 set) Mode.
When trying to measure the waveforms before and after the inductors without any load connected, I find the board constantly shutting down (JP3 is set).

Due to the DS this means three posibilities: (see attachment)
1. Over Current
2. Over temperature
3. High DC Offset

It can't be over current since my dc power supply is limited to 8A and I also don't think that it is the over temperature.
But I do find a DC Offset at the outputs (more on the right channel than on the left channel).

Then I have tried to use the 1SPW Modulation Mode which strangely works fine.

So my question is if I'm missing out something important to run the EVM in BD Modulation Mode.
If you need any more information please let me know.

Regards,
Jens

  • Hi Jens,
May I know the following info: how much is the PWM frequency? What is the input signal? If it's sinewave, how much is the frequency? Did you change the bootstrap capacitors on the EVM board? Are they still 0.22uF?
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Hi Shawn,

    thanks for your response.

The PWM frequency is 400kHz (AM0-2 set).
The input is a sinusoidal signal up to 500mV.

I haven't changed the bootstrap capacitors so they are still 220uF.

    Regards,

    Jens

  • Hi Jens,
Please let let me know the input signal frequency. What if you use a lower level input signal? Is the issue still there in BD mode?
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Hi Shawn,

    the signal frequency is 1kHz.
I have tried a lot of different input signals from 1uV to 500mV and the boards still shuts down every time in BD mode.

    Regards

    Jens

  • Hi Jens,
Thanks for the info. What is the input mode used here, single or differential mode? If it's differential input mode, please leave JP1 and JP2 open. Is it possibly caused by the input DC?
There isn't any change or rework on the EVM board, right? Are you using BTL mode or PBTL mode? If it's BTL mode, the jumper JP5 and JP6 should be left open.
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Hi Shawn,

no I haven't done any changes to the board yet. I am using the board mostly in BTL mode but find the same occurrence in PBTL mode.

I also have tried both, single and differential mode, but still the same. There is no noticeable DC Offset added to the input signal.

    Regards

    Jens

  • Hi Jens,
This is really strange, we never heard of this issue before. Does the issue still occur when there is no input signal(disconnect the input cable)?
Could you please make sure the jumper setting is correct? For BTL mode and single-ended input mode setting, please close these jumpers: JP1, JP2, JP3, JP4, JP7, AM0~AM2, and open jumper JP5, JP6. Disconnect the input cables to connector RIN, LIN, RIGHT+, RIGHT-, LEFT+ and LEFT-. Apply 12V power supply to PVCC. In this case, the device is in idle mode, does the issue still occur?
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng

  • Hi Shawn,

Yes this still happens in idle mode.

I have done the setup as you suggested (see picture) and also see my measurement results for PVCC, FAULT pin and the waveform before the inductor.

  • Hi Jens,
Thank you very much for the measurement. I can't find any issue in your board setup. Maybe there is something problem in the EVM board, do you have another EVM board? Can you replicate the issue on the other board?
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Hi Shawn,

thanks for your support so far.
Do you have any other suggestions how I can continue to work with this board to get good THD+N measurement results? Possibly with the 1SPW mode?

Sadly I don't have a second EVM to retry my test setup. Is it possible that you can send me another reference board?

    Regards

    Jens

  • Hi Jens,
THD performance in 1SPW mode is worse than BD mode. Usually we recommend customers to use BD mode.
For the EVM board issue, I think you could contact the local TI FAE, they could help you on that.
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Hi Shawn,

could you please help me to find the right TI FAE contact who can support me on this issue?
I couldn't find any information on your website and I wrote a few emails to FAEs that are known in my area (Germany) but I didn't get any responses.

    Regards

    Jens

  • Hi Jens,
I'm sorry to know that. I also don't know who is the appropriate one supporting you in Germany. For your project, where will you buy the TPA3116D2 parts? You should know how to contact the sales, right? The sales will introduce the TI FAE or distribution FAE who provide help on your technical questions.
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
