The TI specs on the TAS5342L states that the absolute max PVDD is 46v yet in the recommended operating conditions you indicate PVDD typ is 32v and max is 34v. What happens between 34v and 46v? Can I run some tests at 40V without damaging the part?

We can not recommend you use our parts outside of the recommended operating conditions shown on our data sheets, that's why it's called recommended! :-)
The reason we have such a wide margin between ABS MAX and Recommended is to accommodate voltage spikes that will occur when switching high currents. I don't know if you intend to run at 40V continuously, or if this is some sort of margin testing, or ...
In the same family, we offer TAS5352 which has a recommended voltage of up to 37V, and we also have the TAS5162 which has a recommended range up to 52.5V.
All these parts are pin-to-pin (depending on package option, of course), so if 40V is a hard requirement for your system, you probably need to look at switching to the TAS5162.
Voltage spikes exceeding the recommended operating conditions may cause long-term reliability concerns. Also, it is very difficult to measure these voltage spikes; you need to have really good measurements in order to see the spikes, as they are very short in time duration.
