PCM5252: PCM5252 vs PCM1794

Part Number: PCM5252
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1794, , PCM5242, PCM1794A

Dear TI team,

I've been reading the PCM5252 and PCM1794 datasheets and aparte from some minor difference I can't see a huge difference between those two. As far as I noticed the 5252 seems to be newer than the 1794. Could you be so kind to explain the main difference between those two. Is there an EVM available for those two?

Regards!

  • Hi,

    Welcome to the e2e forum.

These two devices are very different.

Firstly, the PCM1794 is a current output DAC, while the PCM5252 is a voltage output device. The PCM5252 has significantly improved out of band noise. The PCM5252 is a DirectPath device, meaning it has a charge pump to generate the negative supply so the DAC output can be centered around 0V. In addition, it has a DSP internal to the device where various process flows can be selected. In addition it has a smart amp functionality that can be implemented.

We do not have a EVM for either of these device, but we do have one for the PCM5242, which has the same analog portion of the PCM5252, but it does not have the SmartAmp feature. Instead, it has a few hybrid flows that can selected depending on the application.

    Thanks!
    Paul
  • Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for your fast response. I still have some doubts about PurePath SmartAmp in the PCM5252, is there any documentation that you would recommend for this feature?

And why is there such a big price difference between the PCM1794 and the PCM5252, which is the main advantage of the PCM1794 over the PCM5252/5242?

    Regards!

  • The PCM1794A is still TI's highest performing DAC, with up to 132 SNR and 0.0004% THD. While the PCM5242/52 is a very feature rich device and has very respectable performance, the PCM1794A is considered on of the industries highest performance devices.

    Thanks!
