LM4766: The way to Mute

Part Number: LM4766

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering LM4766 and has a question about the mute function.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

According to the data sheet P.14 MUTE MODE section
www.ti.com/.../lm4766.pdf

The muting function of the LM 4766 allows the user to mute the music going into the amplifier by drawing more than 0.5 mA out of each mute pin on the device.

This is accomplished as shown in the Typical Application Circuit where the resistor RM is chosen with reference to your negative supply voltage and is used in conjunction with a switch.

The switch when opened cuts off the current flow from pin 6 or 11 to - VEE, therefore placing the LM 4766 into mute mode.

I think there seems to be contradiction in the description.

Which  is correct ① or ② ?

① The muting function of the LM4766 allows the user to mute the music going into the amplifier by drawing more than 0.5 mA out of each mute pin (I think 6 pin, 11 pin) on the device.

② The switch from opened cuts off the current flow from pin 6 or 11 to - VEE, therefore placing the LM4766 into mute mode.

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi-san,
I appologize for the confusion in the datasheet. When greater than 0.5mA current is pulled through the resistor RM on each MUTE pin, the amplifier is pulled out of mute mode. Please refer to the Figure 33 in the datasheet.

  • Hi Shawn,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand when the current flow is more than 0.5mA from MUTE pin, the amplifier goes to MUTE mode.

I'll share this information with the customer.

    I appreciate your great help.

    Best regards,
    Shinichi
