TAS2505: Short to Battery and GND Protection

Hi Team,

One of my customers has a requirement of

1) Analog input to amplifier(Microphone) to be fed to amplifier.

2) Digital audio from microcontroller need to be converted to analog and amplified & drive speaker

3) Amplifier is expected to be 2W, & and work in range of 4.5V supply

4) The analog audio IN(mic) & Out(Speaker) will be passed through a connector. All the signals passing through connector needs to be protected for battery to short and Short to Ground.

Looks like TAS2505 does not have these protection features.

We can split codec IC & amplifier separately also.

Kindly suggest suitable part or protection in this contest

Hi Praveen,

The speaker output of TAS2505 has short circuit protection, it includes short between terminals, to supply and to GND. After a short occurs the speaker driver must be disabled/enabled to resume operation.

Regarding the analog input, I would expect there should be no problem by occasional short, although the input signal might be affected by this. I could try to run some tests if it is needed to know the behavior of analog input on short circuit.

Hi Ivan,

Customer wants Short to 'Battery' and GND protection on these pins. I think Short to Supply means only to the Vdd of the IC and not to battery. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Praveen,

If "battery" is a higher voltage than the supply voltage for TAS2505 then the device could be damaged. This is outside of the absolute max specs.

Hi Ivan,

As per the specs mentioned earlier and considering the battery is 12V (Automotive Application), what is best solution from TI?
