TPA2028D1: Minimum and maximum value of external pull-up resistor(s)

Part Number: TPA2028D1

Hello Texas Instruments,

We are using the TPA2028D1 audio amplifier in our design.  We are looking for the minimum value, and the maximum value, of external pull-up resistor(s) used in conjunction with / used on the output side of this device.  Please advise.

Thank you,

Mike Jahed

  • Hi Mike,

Welcome to E2E, thanks for your interest in our products.
I am confused about your question, Do you want to use external pull-up resistors on the device outputs?

  • Hi Jose,

Thank you. My apologies, I meant on the input side. We are using an Analog Devices / Linear Technology LTC4311 I2C bus accelerator. The function of this device is to to dynamically pull the I2C bus lines (clock and data) back high after a transaction, with a fast rise time. Due to the component shortage in the market, this LTC4311 I2C bus accelerator is in short supply, and we are looking at the possibility of removing it from the circuit.

One of the devices on the I2C bus is your TPA2028D1 audio amplifier. So if we remove the LTC4311 I2C bus accelerator from the circuit, the rise time of the signal at the input side of the TPA2028D1 will potentially be significantly slower. In order to improve the rise time of the signal at the input of the TPA2028D1 (make it faster), we need to have external pull-up resistors on its inputs.

Our question is what is your recommended minimum value, and maximum value, of external pull-up resistor(s) that we would put on the input side of the TPA2028D1, in order to improve the rise time of the signal(s) on the input side?

    Thank you,

  • Hi Mike,

It is always recommended to use a high value of the pull-up resistor. The TPA2028D1EVM is using the pull-up resistors of 2KΩ, so you could select the pull-up resistors higher or equal to 2KΩ.

  • Hi Jose,

Thank you very much for your support. We have one more question please (last question): When you measure the rise time of the signals on the I2C bus side of the TPA2028D1EVM, do you use 10% to 90% signal levels, or 20% to 80% signal levels?

  • Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay. I don't have any percent about the rise time, but you can find the I2C Timing Requirements into the datasheet.
