PCM1807: Can PCM1807 be used to build a decibel meter?

Part Number: PCM1807

My customer has an analogue microphone,

and they need something from TI to build a deciber meter to monitor environmental noise and upload the data to their cloud.

Does TI has some scheme to build a decibel meter?

For example, can audico ADC PCM1807 be used to do it?

Or can we use the ordinary ADC and MCU to do it?

Wait for your reply, thank you!

  • Hi,

I am not aware of a reference design for decibel meter but will inquire internally to see if we happen to have anything close.

As far as specific part for the application goes, I would like to request the performance specification from the customer so that we can recommend the right part from our converter portfolio...Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Ravi

  • The key to getting accurate SPL measurements is complete characterization of the gain structure, from microphone to ADC. You need a calibrated microphone with known sensitivity. You need known preamp gain. And you need to know your ADC's reference voltage and input range. Since the PCM1807's reference is a function of VCC, unless you can guarantee VCC accuracy, you won't get the results you want.

Choose a converter with a built-in reference which has a proper spec for that reference, or choose one which allows you to proper a high-quality external reference.
