PGA2500: Need of maximum supply current consumed by PGA2500

Part Number: PGA2500

Hello sir,

We decide to use PGA2500 in this project.

In Datasheet mentioned that Quiescent current of PGA2500 is ± 40mA at ±5 Volts rail.

While working time what is the maximum supply current consumed by PGA2500 at  ±5 Volts rail?.

Regards

Lakshmanan V

  • Hi Lakshmanan,

The total current consumption of the PGA2500 is the addition of the quiescent current of the PGA2500 device plus the load current.  An estimate can be calculated based on the load impedance and the output signal frequency and amplitude.

For example, if driving an Audio ADC, the total current consumption will be a function of the RC components of the anti-aliasing filter, the ADC input current and the frequency and amplitude of the signal at the PGA2500 output. .

    Thank you and Regards,

    Luis

  • Hi Lakshmanan,

If you let us know the load impedance or RC components at the PGA2500 output and the max frequency/ max amplitude expected at the PGA2500 output in your application we could provide an estimate estimate of the total current consumption.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Luis
  • Hello sir,

    PGA maximum peak-peak input voltage = 5V
    PGA maximum peak-peak output voltage = 8V
Max mum input signal frequency = 4kHz
    Supply voltage ±5 Volts
    PGA2500 output connect with AD7768-4.

Please tell me the maximum supply current consumed by PGA2500 at ±5 Volts rail?

    Regards

  • Hi Lakshmanan,

The load current consumption is dependent on the R-C-R filter impedance, the ADC "average" input current consumption as well as the output signal frequency and amplitude. The ADC presents a switch capacitor dynamic load to the amplifier, and the average ADC input current consumption is dependent on the sampling/modulator frequency as well as the sample-and-hold capacitor structure on the device. This ADC is not a TI device and therefore I don't have an estimate for its average input current consumption.

For example, if we were to assume that an R-C-R differential filter with 33ohms-330pF-33ohm was used with a fully-differential signal of 4-kHz and 8-Vpp amplitude, the filter load current consumption would be around ~50uA. If you were to assume the ADC average input current is 500-uA, the typical total current consumption would be around ~30.55 mA (typ) or 40.55mA (max) using the quiescent current spec of the PGA2500.

    Best Regards,
    Luis
