PCM1748: Dynamic range

Part Number: PCM1748
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1753

Hi Team,

I would like to know the dynamic range when using this with 16bits.

I know that the dynamic range is listed in the data sheet when using 24bit.

PCM1748

  24bit MIN: 94dB  TYP: 100dB

  16bit MIN: xxdB   TYP: xxxdB

PCM1753

  24bit MIN: 100dB  TYP: 106dB

  16bit MIN: xxxdB  TYP: xxxdB

Best Regards,

Kenji

  • Hi Kenji,

The ideal dynamic range of a 16-bit DAC is about 98dB.  So the two DACs will not perform above that.

I measured this on the PCM1753 and found the 16bit DR as 96.5dB, the 24-bit DR was 103.5dB, which aligns with our measurements.

We do not have full characterization data under these conditions, so I cannot prove statistical typicals or minimums, but I think you should assume a typical DR of -12dB lower than the 24bit value.

    PCM1753 16bit TYP: ~94dB

    PCM1748 16bit TYP: ~88dB

    Thanks,

    Paul
