TPA2017D2: tolerance for short circuit on the output terminal

Hi team,

My customer has a question about the short circuit tolerance on the output terminals of TPA2017D2.

The resistance between the each output terminal to GND is 10 - 60 ohm, it seems the internal FET was destroyed after the short circuit test that the output terminals (OUT+ and OUT-) are shorted and the sound is applied for several times.

Can the thermal protection of TPS2017D2 protect himself in this kind of situation? Is it intolerable for him?

    Tasumi-san,

    The protection current for the TPA2017D2 is around 1.5A. This protection is purposed as short-circuit and not over-current protection. The threshold variation should be considered.

    In case of the thermal protection, it can protect the circuit just when the junction temperature surpasses 150°C to prevent damage to the IC. If the short circuit issue reaches this thermal value, the TPA2017D2 will enter in a protection state.

    This is Tatsumi-san's customer.

    Is the short-circuit protector which you mentioned supposing AC current?

    If the differencial outputs are connected each other, 5V-300kHz square wave current must flow directly.

    Or if the protector can detect only "to GND" current, it cannot detect the current which I mentioned above.

    Hi, Hanzawa-san,

    I apologize for my late response.

    The short-circuit protection applies to both AC and DC current. It is not dependent of the GND current. This current protection is actually enabled once the current threshold (approximately 1.5A) is surpassed.

    Even if the differential outputs are connected each other, the 5V-300KHz square wave must generate a current protection.
