Professional mode is typically referred to as AES-3 and consumer mode is S/PDIF. The standards are identical except for some of the channel status bits. Copy protection is something that is part of the S/PDIF protocol and was intended to prevent the duplication of copywritten material. This is part of the Serial Copy Management System but many of the formats that used this, like CD-R and Cassettes, are no longer in widespread use.
