TS3A227E: How do I interface TS3A227E-EVM with MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad Rev 1.5

Part Number: TS3A227E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430G2ET

e2e,

I have ordered https://www.ti.com/tool/TS3A227E-EVM for to do evaluation. However, it doesn’t come with MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad Rev 1.5 where I’ve ordered MSP-EXP430G2ET as per attached for LaunchPad. May I know if this is the correct one?

We have received MSP-EXP430GET but the launchpad user guide jumpers are different from the physical products. Can you please which is the correct LaunchPad to order?

Thank you,

Adam

  • Hi Adam,

The EVM that this user guide refers to is not available. The current replacement is the EVM you currently have. This board supports the correct microcontroller so it should be fine.  As you have already installed the GUI the differences in running the device should be minimal to non-existent. The error that you are seeing is a common one - if this is seen please verify that the EVM is also connected to the computer. If it is connected try reconnecting it.

If this doesn't solve your problem please let me know and  I will see what else we can do!

  • Parker,

You indicated that all should work even with the MSP-EXP430GET. However, we continue to see the same error in failure to detect COM port.

Is the setup with the new MSP-EXP430GET tested and verified?

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Adam,

The MSP-EXP430G2ET is the replacement board for the obsolete MSP-EXP430G2. Both MSP boards have the same launch pad connections as they support same type of microcontroller. The MSP board has changed - however the hardware and connections between devices has not changed so there shouldn't be an issue with use of device.

That being said - can you verify that the EVM is connected to the computer. This should look very similar to the picture below

If the EVM is not connected the COM port will not register and the error you are seeing will show up.

Also can you verify what MSP430 is being used in the board?

    Please let me know.

  • Hi Parker,

I had confirmed that the laptop recognized the COM Port the MSP430G2ET is connected to. When attempt to trigger the flash download button via the GUI, the laptop is able to initialize the same COM port. This show the COM port is recognized accordingly. However when the GUI is ran it consistently shows Unable to open com port and not able to read the default register. Are we missing anything here?

    Thanks,

    Christina

  • Hi Christina,

We are currently looking into this problem. It may take some time as we have to get the parts in and work with the MSP430 team if a firmware update is required on our GUI. I will provide an update next week with what we have found because we are not sure what directly is wrong.

  • Hi Parker,

    Thanks for looking into it.

Meanwhile, may I know if we do have any old hardware which works with exiting GUI? We can share it with the customer to allow them to proceed with the design while we work on the investigation?

    Thanks,

    Christina

  • Hi Christina,

At the moment the tested hardware for this EVM is now obsolete it is the MSP-EXP430G2 but I couldn't find any stock of this device. No other hardware has been tested for this device and the upgraded MSP EVM is the option that we have tested to ensure it works with the GUI. We are working on this issue and hopefully will find an answer soon. I am sorry about the inconvenience - but as soon as we have more information I will let you know.

  • Hi Christina,

I wanted to give an update - but please continue with your questions as they come up offline through email. It seems the problem is with the GUI itself - we are currently looking into what the exact problem is and looking into the GUI's software to see what needs updated. This might take some time as our product line doesn't work with GUI's very often. But in the meantime please don't hesitate to ask any more questions so that we can help you test with the EVM sans GUI. I am going to close this thread - but please continue any questions you may have in our email chain.
