TAS5731M: Dimensioning power supply for audio amplifiers

Part Number: TAS5731M
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5825M

Hello,

I have a rather newbie question regarding the power requirements for audio amplifiers in general.

The TAS5731M is described as a 2 x 30 W amplifier.  How exactly does that translate into the required electrical power input?  Is it a drect relationship?

The datasheet says "Up to 90% efficiency" but that's the best case, so what kind of margin is necessary?

Thanks,

Vic.

  • Hello Vic,

The 2x30W Spec is with 24V PVDD, 8 ohm load, of a THD+N of 10%. Your Power supply current would need be high enough to reach that output power The efficiency vs output power plots can be seen in Figure 25 and 39 in the datasheet.

Also in regards to your system need is there a reason you are looking at the TAS5731M, The TAS5825M is one of the latest device in our portfolio that uses a closed-loop architecture that reduces the component count needed considerably compared to our older open-loop devices like the TAS5731M as well as many advanced features that can help improve efficiency, device/speaker protection, as well as offer a better firmware/software development experience.

    Best regards,

    Luis

  • Thanks, I think I understand how to analyze the system now.  I will look at the TAS5825M.  It definitely could be a good option.
