need help understanding PCM1798 DAC... please

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1798, PCM1796, PCM1795, PCM1792A

hi, i need seem help; i'm developing an app to use with the Devialet Phantom Speaker - en.devialet.com/.../

i notice it has a PCM1798 DAC.

i'm confused about its (the chip's) ability to handle a native DSD stream... can it? if so up to what resolution? and what can it do - will it convert native DSD to analogue?

thanks

  • Hi Philip,

Sorry for the confusion, I see that the data sheet mistakenly mentions DSD once, and the product folder also states that is has DSD support. This is incorrect. The PCM1796, PCM1795, PCM1792A are the parts in that performance range that can handle both DSD and I2S input. You can make verify by looking at the electrical characteristics and checking if there are DSD performance specs. This is available for software controllable parts. These parts are tested at DSD64 (2.8224 MHz) but its clocking limit for DSD is 11.2986 MHz. There is also a difference in recommended output stage between I2S output and DSD output.

  • ah tx for the prompt reply Justin; i did have a sneaking doubt it was DSD incompatible and the data sheet was wrong; it makes sense to me now in conjunction with this devialet product as it performs a lot of DSP work, which of course, is impossible in a bitstream domain and necessitates PCM...
