PGA2310: half of PGA2310 goes high for no apparent reason

Part Number: PGA2310

I am daisy chaining two PGA2310 volume controllers in a balanced preamp design. Every once in a while half of each of the devices goes to maximum gain (all1's). I am pretty certain this is not a software issue. Is there some external occurrence that can reset the gain on half of the device? for example, if the Left output is given a momentary DC voltage or is grounded momentarily, or a momentary drop in supply voltage, etc...

  • Mark,

Offhand I cannot think of an external cause for this symptom, aside from a communication error. I would expect a power supply glitch to reset both channels to 0 gain, rather than setting one channel to full gain.

    A few questions for you:

    1. Is one device or channel more affected than others, or does it seem to be completely random?

    2. Does the volume just increase, or does a readback of the PGA2310 register contain all 1s for a single channel?

    3. Have you verified that there's no traffic on the bus prior to the volume change?

    4. Would it be possible to provide us with a schematic? Without seeing your design, this may be difficult to diagnose.
