TPA3110D2-Q1: how to think output limit of this device

Part Number: TPA3110D2-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3110D2

Dear all,

Could you teach me how max current and power this device can output?

If you can not define the limit of current and power, can you define safe operation range? How current? How wattage?

*back ground

I'm thinking about total system and choosing the input huse connected to battery and the output speaker at PBTL mode.

To choose and protect these two devices, I must know how this device can output.

Now, we are selecting 10A huse against input battery. Is this enough?

Best regards,

  • Hello Yamamoto-san! Please reference my ealier responses and also please reference www.ti.com/.../sloa031.pdf and www.ti.com/.../sloa116.pdf Thanks, Jeff

Shawn, Do you have further recomendations?
  • Hi Yamamoto-san,

The maximum output power includes transient output and continuous output. The transient max output power depends on the OC THR of device. For TPA3110D2, OC THR is around 4A generally. If it's used in PBTL mode, the OC THR is also doubled. While the continuous max output power depends on the thermal performance. There are many facors that affact the thermal performance, e.g. load resistance, power supply, device package, Rdson, w/wo a heatsink, system level thermal design.....  Please refer to the Figure 16,17,31 in the TPA3110D2-Q1 datasheet. This data is based on our TPA3110D2 EVM. Please also follow our EVM design as much as possibe during your system design.

  • Hi Shawn-san,

    Thank you for your answer.

When I measured transient OC limit, short-to-GND was 5.1A, short-to-power was 5.9A, shorted load was 4.1A.
What is the reason why the detection threashold are different with each other?

Are the reason the detection threashold? or slew rate? or response rate?

    Best regards,
  • Hi Yamamoto-san,
The detection THR is the same inside the device for all these three modes(short to GND, short to power and shorted load). I think you are measuring the output current on the load(after the inductors) instead of on the output pins(in front of the inductors), right? If you measure the current on the output pins, the THR should be very similar. The return current to the device includes two parts: from LC and from speaker. So the measured current on the output pins includes the both.
