TLV320AIC23B: The DAC of TLV320AIC23B

Part Number: TLV320AIC23B

Dears,

I have one question about DAC of TLV320AIC23B. The output typical value is 1VRMS at 0-dB full-scale output voltage (FFFFFF) . Does this mean this devices's DAC get up to 24 bits? A data of FFFFFF could create a 1VRMS output, That is said, a data of F00000  could create a 0.5VRMS output, is this right?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Ricardo

  • Hello Ricardo,

The TLV320AIC23B can use 16,20,24, or 32-Bit Word length for the audio data.

writing (FFFFFF) is probably misleading since I2S data is signed (2's complement).   The point is that 0dB full-scale output is 1V RMS

what is your interest in the AIC23B?  This is a very old device that I don't recommend for a new project, Our ability to support this aged device is limited.  the TLV320AIC3104 is an upgraded version of this device with lower cost.  I would recommend using that device before the AIC23B.

  • Hi Wilson,

Our customer is using this device. He submitted some questions to ACSC(Asian Customer Support Central). But I'm not familiar with AIC23B.

He get a record from Mic, then he using DAC output this record, but the output voltage is too small. Is it because that the input gain is too small? In this condition, can we amplifier the signal to a larger voltage level through internal programming? And he want the signal output from LOUT pin and ROUT pin.

    Regards,

    Ricardo

  • Ricardo,

This device does not have a lot of registers to configure. There are volume controls for the left and right line inputs, however they only offer +12dB gain, which is not enough for a microphone. section 3.2.2 in the datasheet provides a suggested microphone input circuit.
I however would recommend that the customer select the TLV320AIC3104, as it has a built in PGA that can provide 59.5dB gain.

  • Wilson,

I understand now. Thank you for your help.
