TPA6404Q1EVM: Use TPA6404Q1EVM standalone

Part Number: TPA6404Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6404-Q1

Hallo TI Team,

I just got the TPA6404Q1EVM Evaluation Board to evaluate this chip for a customer. For the first tests it seems to work fine.

For some more audio evaluation with our audio guys i wanted to turn it over to them, but noticed that the board does not save any settings. So after every Power-on, we have to connect with the PurePath 3 Software to at least enable the output channels. And this software needs this lengthy registering process, which is bad if multiple people should evaluate the sound we can generate with this board.

Also we wanted to use the eval board in a demo unit for the new product at a trade show, which of course also will not work if we need to enable it over usb every time it is turned on.

Is there any way we could enable the outputs by default, or save some settings ?

Another question is, are there any pads for the i2c communication to the chip ? If we are not able to save the settings, maybe we could attach our own microcontroller to setup the board after power-on ?

kind regards,

Dominik Wenger

  • Hello Dominik,
The TPA6404-Q1 EVM does not have the ability to run without the software. It is your EVM and you can change it as necessary to add a microcontroller to run your software. Be careful with I2C, the TPA6404-Q1 cannot have two master devices on the I2C. You should probably disconnect the other I2C controller if you add your own.
  • Hello Gregg,

That is not really nice from the board developers. They could have given the XMOS chip a save parameter function. Also it would be really nice if the board would have an easily accessible I2C port.

But i managed to find the two 0 Ohm resistors on the board and connected two wire to it to my own microcontroller, and with some trial and error managed to set the correct registers. So that works now.

Still waiting for the full datasheet. Why does everthing for this chip have to be behind seperate request buttons which need 2-3 business days to process ?

    kind regards
    Dominik Wenger
