PCM5102A: Amplifiers that accept Directpath input

Part Number: PCM5102A

Hi there,

I'm designing an audio solution using a PCM5102A Directpath DAC.

I am trying to locate the list of TI amplifier IC's that accept a Directpath ground-centered signal as an input.

Specifically I'm looking for a high fidelity >25W 7V-20V (approx) single supply power amplifier, and a 3.3V single supply headphone amp (mono or stereo).

The reason I'm asking here is the TI online catalogue doesn't seem to allow filtering by input type beyond the generic analog/digital/PWM choices.

Most amps I have looked at have an input voltage range of -0.3V to Vcc+0.3V which obviously will not work.

How can I find a list of TI products that satisfy this requirement?

p.s I am still learning so apologies if I've overlooked something obvious

Thank you!

Jerry

  • Hi Jeremiah,

The key here is that you are looking for a single-supply amplifier. Generally, if an amplifier is single supply, then it requires a DC offset for the input. We have some exceptions to this. For example, the TPA6047A has an integrated charge pump like the PCM5102A, so it will generate its own negative supply. These charge pumps are limited in their current output, so you will not see high wattage outputs on these.
Our single supply class-D devices have an offset requirement for the input, but these are usually high impedance inputs. This means that a simple DC-blocking, AC-coupling capacitor can be used to separate the 0V centered output of the DAC and ~3-4V centered input of the amplifier.

    Check out this video:training.ti.com/designing-premium-audio-system
At about 9:30 we talk about the input of the class D with the PCM5102A.

    Good luck!

  • Thank Paul for a very informative answer! I will look at AC coupling to bias the signal.
