TAS2557: What is really needed for speaker characterization

Part Number: TAS2557
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PP-SALB2-EVM, , TAS2563, TAS2559

Dear Forum,

for a medium-sized company building doorline systems I'd like to evaluate if TI's SmartAmps will get us further in building up devices with loud and small speakers.

Unfortunately I can't currently find out what devices (EVM / PP-SALB2 / etc.) are "really" needed to get a first demo for my customer showing that the smartAmp will improve performance of a particular speaker the customer has already choosen. (Unfortunately there is no characterization from the speaker-manufacturer).

Is the "laser" that can be connected to the PP-SALB2-EVM really needed? Or is it included? Which one can be used?

As I understood the Laser is only used for Excursion-Measurement but as speech is the most important use-case for the customer and Excursion will only come into weight on Low freqencies, this might not be the most important paramter, or do I get something wrong?

I think the Customer is willing to invest in further equipement as soon as I would show them a successfull demo demonstrating the improvement that can be reached with a smart amp.
So currently the most important task is to get a demo running that shows some improvements on their speaker without having to invest to much in evaluation hardware.

Or may it be possible to "rent" the needed equipement somewhere?

May someone give me some hints here?

Best Regards

  • Hi Pascal,

In order to run the speaker characterization you need at least PP-SALB2-EVM and a SmartAmp EVM, like TAS2557, TAS2559 or TAS2563.

The laser is needed only if you don't have the speaker characteristics. The laser can be used to obtain the Bl and excursion of the speaker. But these can also be provided manually to the software. The speaker characteristics that are needed for the characterization are:

    • Diaphragm area or diameter
    • Bl
    • Excursion limit (max excursion)
    • Thermal limit

The laser equipment is not produced by TI, if you need details on what can be used for this purpose you can send me an email to: ivan.salazar@ti.com and I can provide further details.

In order to demonstrate the smartamp, you would need to:

    • Characterize the speaker
    • The previous step will generate a ppc3 tuning file based on the speaker characteristics
    • Then you can fine tune the device in terms of Equalizer and DRC
