PCM1773: How can we confirm whether PCM1773 will not broken by adding an ESD protection device?

Part Number: PCM1773
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD1E1B04, TPD1E0B04

 Hello guys,

One of my customers is using PCM1773 for their current products. The customer has a question as the follow. Could you please give me your reply or comment?

According to their information,  in very rare case, VOUTL or VOUTR of PCM1773 on their products was boken when ear-phone jack connected to a audio AMP input was inserted to ear-phone plug connected

to  couppling capacitor connected VOUTL or VOUTR terminal of PCM1773.

So they are considering attaching ESD protection device, TPD1E1B04 between coupling capacitor output connected to OUTL or OUTR and GND.

At this situation, they have the following question.

Q. In general, how can we confirm whether PCM1773 will not broken by adding an ESD protection device?

Is it O.K. to confirm that OUTL and OUTR terminal voltage of PCM1773 at ear-phone jack inserting is less than OUTl/R absolute maximum ratings ( VCC+0.3V or GND-0.3V)?

But I think it is difficult to reduce OUTL/R voltages less than the absolute maximum because TPD1E1B04 break down voltage is about 6.4V.

Could you please give me your reply or comment? It would be much appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya.
