PCM9211: S/PDIF transmission distance

Part Number: PCM9211

HI,

Our customer  is going to use PCM9211 for the long distance transmission, does PCM9211 support 200m distance with S/PDIF signal? Or do we have any application solution which could be used audio signal(analog or digital audio signal)  transmission of long distance?

Best regards

Kailyn

  • Hi Kailyn,

I've read a few external sites about this subject and it seems like distances over 10-20m aren't usually advised for S/PDIF transmission.  This makes sense because at some point the capacitance of the coax or other cabling used will load the device output stage and prevent proper signal transmission.

AES3 seems to be the better choice for longer distance communications.  I pulled the information below from the following site, we can't guarantee it's 100% accurate but it seems to match with the information on other sites and provided a nice overview of the interfaces.

Table 1 indicates a large difference between the minimum output level and the minimum input level (2 V vs. 0.2 V for AES3 for instance). The difference is accounted for by two factors:
    1) Half the signal is loss due to the impedance matching required for high-speed transmission lines (output impedance equals input impedance creating a 6 dB pad); and
    2) Signal loss driving long cables.

  • Hello Collin ,

Thank you very much for your detailed information.
